Stuff & things 27/12/2010

In search of inspiration for new year’s resolves, a few of the following have been of most assistance:

  • Tim Ferriss‘s archives, particularly the “Superstar Effect” and this one about Bill Clinton’s Reality Distortion Field.
  • Not exactly summer-season fare but this Coconut Red Lentil Soup sounds totally super… Especially now my body has decided it wants nothing today with wheat-y, gluten-y good times. Sadface.
  • How amazing is the concept of being a Spiritual Athlete? It’s a Kris Carr effort: “Yes, that’s what you are, a spiritual athlete. So why the heck would you bolt out of bed and start your day without a warm-up?”
  • Tavi’s blog: Style Rookie – that one by that superstar teen blogger. You know, mini-Wintour. What a gun.
  • Gala Darling. Everything she does is gold really. I’ve been a fan since pretty well the beginning & she just gets better & better. I’m hoping she does a 2011 Style Direction post soon, like this, but there’s good bits flying left, right & centre over there, including this, this & this. Actually, watch if you read that last one, be sure to watch the video & give it a go. Sarah Wilson has too.

Gratitude list 5/12/2010

I can’t believe it’s Sunday night again already! A busy busy week makes for lots of tired yawns but also lots of super accomplishments… And hopefully this week will be filled with fun, laughter, early Christmas cheer, good friends, and maybe another win at netball tomorrow night πŸ˜‰

Shout-outs this week go to:

 Mia madre for cleaning my car, inside & out, AND doing a spot of panel-beating to iron out a mark some poor soul left on my little green machine.

 Brunch followed by scones & shopping centre people watching with the besties. The brunch was at a top local cafe (Stillwater on Belmore) that I’ll definitely be hitting again!

 The fact that my Christmas shopping is 75% DONE! I’ve even wrapped the completed ones – very pleased with my organisational skills πŸ™‚

 My beautiful Christmas tree – a few new decorations & some great lights have updated it for the season

 Getting back in the swimming pool & helping parents with skills & strategies to get their kids swimming & behaving strongly & confidently around water. Brings me so much joy & I’m insanely passionate about it all.

 Eating amazingly tasty food & having some wines while listening to friends recount hilarious stories

 Knowing that all you need is love… And knowing that love has to first flourish within me, myself & I. I’m embarking on a challenge to put love out wherever I possibly can. Love breeds love breeds love.

Gratitude list 28/11/2010

Early start tomorrow morning + a headache + too much technology for one day = a probably short list… Quality over quantity πŸ˜‰

Things I’m loving now:
 Powering through work & tasks & crossing things off the to-do list!
 Polite & helpful kids – some people just really understand what it takes to be a parent & raise super kick-ass kids!
 Eating healthily – I had a meat-free day Saturday & I’m trying to stay on the salads… Of course they are my kind of fun kitchen-sink salads but still, better than a lot of options!
 Absolutely owning my gym session today – ran intervals & then did strength training & some dynamic stretching.
 Listening to a couple of stories in the last few days about young women – one attacked to near-death by her then boyfriend and another about a 16-year-old who has been in foster care for pretty much her entire life – and being reminded that I’m one of the luckiest kids in the world.

Random sparkles of awesome 24/11/2010

Sometimes it’s fabulous when someone asks you how you are and won’t “Fine thanks” for an answer if they know it’s probably not the case. When someone wants to take the time to really listen &, other than seeing you smile, has no vested interest in your story otherwise, it’s a true blessing.

Sometimes it’s not “cheering up” that people need when they’re down (it’s not like a me-me-me pity party would work either!) but it’s the simple offering of a listening ear that doesn’t try to solve your situation.

Sometimes the best thing someone can do is take the time to say “how are you?” & be ready to really listen for the response.

My love letter to the universe:

 Swimming at the beach in the late afternoon wearing my brand new super-feminine bikini has got to be the best way to end the week & centre yourself for the days to come.

 My parents, particularly my mother, for being on my side in challenging times.

 My friends for having play dates with me – seeing Harry Potter 7.1, going shopping, brunching…

 Finding some super cool new clothes that work back with a bunch of other items already in the closet.

 Really really realising that better things are coming, that the universe is on your side & that everything will work itself out in time.

 Buying my first Christmas present of the season… Preparation!

 This website: I desperately want a puppy dawg but my current life & abode isn’t suitable. Here’s hoping I can rescue a little fella someday soon.

 Tangerine & glitter nail polish. Nuff said!

 While I am responsible for my own happiness, it was fantastic to get some random compliments on my jazzy new printed silk pants today. My housemate & I think we should try & get a store to sponsor us – we have a spare room that could function as a communal closet – so we could rock their clothes in our respectively awesome ways. Forever New & Sportsgirl, we’re looking at you!

Happy Sunday night! Wishing the weekend could run longer but according to the weatherman (& the mad humidity!) it’s supposed to storm tomorrow so at least being in an office won’t feel so bad.

Here’s my list of sunshine, strawberries & sandy swimmers!

 Swimming in the ocean this afternoon – the water was a bit fresh but it was just the best way to spend a sunny Sunday afternoon.

 Garage sales & old people’s horded crap – some mates of mine cleaned out their dementia-afflicted grandma’s house with a huge garage sale this weekend & a scored some cute glassware & that sweet vintage hat. Other garage sale mention goes to the two cookbooks that my own lovely granny & aunty hooked me up with – one is an Italian one with plenty of old school homely feasts & the other is a really interesting gluten-free number. One person’s trash….!

 Passionate & happy kiddies – Big BLESS goes to the Junior Masterchef finalists. Those sisters are the loveliest, Siena is way too damn polite & friendly & sweet, & that Jack kid is wild & just fabulous. They are awesome & an inspiration to young & old with their superb sportsmanship.

 Pineapple. Enough said really! (can’t wait til peaches & nectarines get cheaper than $12/kg!!)

 Kickin absolute bank butt with paying off my credit card. Christmas might give it a shake but so far so good!

Here’s to a top-notch week filled with joy, laughter, smile-worthy surprises & oozy lovely goodness!

See my hat

See my hat

See my (vintage) hat

And when I say “vintage”, I mean it: the hat is a rescued relic from a mate’s grandma’s house!

Seeking: Adventure

Since seeing RED (which, while it had the most ridiculous “plot” I’ve seen in a good while, was actually hilarious & awesome & involved Helen Mirren toting high-powered weaponry. Anyway, I digress. As you were.) I’ve been using “Guatemala” as my “Timbuktu”. You know, “I just want to throw out my phone & go volunteer in an orphanage in Timbuktu Guatemala.”

Unlike the stars of RED though (which I think were all drunk at an Oscar’s after party & thought it’d be hilarious if they all got together & made a crazy movie where they could dress up as retired CIA agents & relive the glory days) I knew nothing about Guatemala (let alone any top-secret mission that occurred there in the 70s). Until I saw this post by Tim Leffal on Tim Ferris’s blog: 8 Exotic Destinations You Can Afford.

I want to go to all of these places! How does one get paid to travel the world & take pictures & write about their experiences? That’s my dream. (Along with being a spy & being an actress.)
