Train track at sunset | lizniland.com

Here’s what’s making my week:

  • Taking a break from training. After a weak effort last weekend, my trainer recommended I take a rest week. The only time I’ve ever taken that long off was at Christmas in 2013. So… fair call. I won’t know until next week if it’s had any effect on my lifting but I certainly feel calmer and well rested.
  • Netflix. We finally pulled the trigger on letting the juggernaut into our minimal TV household. It could be dangerous but lately, there’s really not much worth watching on free-to-air anyway. So far, I’m loving Chef’s Table, OITNB and Brooklyn Nine-Nine.
  • Yoga. We had a lovely practice at Gritshed tonight with a few new faces which was fabulous. We also did “Storytime Yin” last Friday at Ashtanga Yoga Newcastle and learnt about Hindu goddess Kali while we worked our fascia.
  • Having a delightful feast with friends. Check out my post about our lovely lunch at Reef Restaurant.
  • Getting into some flow at work. The Csikszentmihalyi kind. It’s been hectic but I’ve liked my involvement.
  • Getting to spend time with my bestie. We’ve been going strong since Day One of kindergarten and I can’t wait to have her next to me when I get married later this year.
  • Hope you have a fabulous weekend!

Sunrise | lizniland.com

Here’s what’s keeping heart & soul together this week <3

  • Early workouts & awesome sunrises: The above was today’s cracker.
  • Ladies Breakfast: What started as a small group of girls from our male dominated team at work doing lunch together has been gradually morphing into a mini support circle of professional local ladies who brainstorm & troubleshoot monthly over eggs benedict. We met up this morning to work through a new idea. Exciting & energising!
  • Stand-up desk: It’s been 2 weeks since I inherited a stand-up desk at work & I’m loving it! My neck, back & shoulders are feeling so much better for it. I’ll have to do a post on it soon.
  • Yoga: I’ve had to miss a few sessions over the last couple of weeks & it was awesome to get back into it tonight.

What are you grateful for this week?

Thankful Thursday: 30th April

Thankful Thursday April 30 | lizniland.com

A short & sweet one tonight. Here’s a list of the things I’m feeling gratitude for right now:

  • Coffee, coffee, coffee! Especially from The Locomotive – best in town!
  • Being able to get back on the (regular blog posting) horse, even after being railroaded for a few days
  • When your body just knows it needs a rest and forces you to make it happen
  • Being reminded how incredibly important it is to truly love & accept yourself
  • That I live in Australia – we really are a very lucky country
  • Having such sore legs after an epic training session – I may have been walking straight-legged for 3 days but it means I’m getting stronger, right?
  • Date nights with my one & only <3

Love Yourself Well

Love yourself well workshop | lizniland.com

Last night I was lucky enough to join 11 other ladies at Holistic Healthy Honey Cindra Banks’ Love Yourself Well Workshop. In an intimate safe space with raw emotion, bliss balls and herbal tea, strangers became journey(wo)men on the quest for self love.

While Cindra may look the epitome of healthy living, it hasn’t always been that way. The Love Yourself Well Workshop offers an introduction to the healing techniques – such as yoga, a gratitude practice and affirmations – that helped her find her way back to self love and acceptance.

We each received a little goodie bag too with our own affirmation (that’s mine in the photo above) and some assorted samples. It reminded me of an affirmation I used to use regularly & still love:

Every day in every way, I am getting better and better – Emile Coue

It was a lovely evening. My only criticism was that it was too short – it could’ve been a full-day session 🙂 As one participant said, it’s hard to talk about self love with others without feeling like you’re burdening them. I hope Cindra has many more planned!

Pretty snail mail | Thankful Thursday | lizniland.com

A sprinkling of things I’m grateful for this week.

  • Getting great mail. Check out the above pile 🙂 Belated engagement gifts & a super cute wedding invite. Totally makes up for the gas bill!
  • Launching a Facebook page for this site & having a bunch of people like it straight away. I’m so grateful for the support everyone, it’s so inspiring to know I’ve got a solid pack of cheerleaders!
  • Early starts on Sundays. Ain’t nobody got time for long sleep-ins; there’s a farmers’ market to attack and brunch to consume!
  • Yin yoga. If you haven’t tried, track down a class. In Newcastle, I recommend Yoga For All. It’s all about the fascia baby.
  • Hearing cool stories about clever entrepreneurial types. This week’s hottest hits are Autopilot (mates since childhood killing it in San Fran) & Camplify (local dudes about to hit the big time).
  • Recognising when you just need to stop and have a cup of tea. Chill, there’s time. #abundance
  • Catching up with long-time great mates.

What are you loving this week?

My list of love & gratitude for this week, as inspired by Gala Darling‘s old Things I Love Thursday.

Engagement photoshoot | lizniland.com

  • The bloke in the above photo. He’s a good Easter egg, that one.
  • Clever photographers. The above shot is the first taste from our engagement shoot with photographer Lauren Campbell and I can’t wait to see the rest!
  • 4-day working weeks. Thanks Easter. Thanks Jesus. Thanks Bunny.
  • Lifting weights. I’m loving the fresh eyes and different approaches of a new trainer. Still at the best gym in Newcastle but now doing strength-focused bootcamp sessions with Sarah.
  • Health of my family. There was a scare… but it has turned into a treatable scare.
  • Excitement for friends. New homes, new adventures & new babies galore!
  • Chilly autumn days. I say this now… Ha! #novelty
  • Inspiring individuals. I’ve been listening to Ted Talks and Marie Forleo during the afternoon at work.

Things I Love Thursday: Nov 14

The things rockin’ my socks lately:

  • Coming home to a massive case of wine… Woohoo!! Michael has signed us up as ‘Angels’ for NakedWines & this was our first delivery. Can’t wait to sample some new Aussie delights! Naked Wines
  • Sex addicts. Hear me out. For someone that doesn’t watch a whole lot of TV, let alone ‘reality’ rubbish, I’ve surprisingly been a bit obsessed with Sex Rehab with Dr Drew. There’s something about the incredibly tragic lives of these people that’s just so interesting to watch (and not just in a car-crash/it-hurts-but-I-can’t-look-away kind of way).
  • Workplace wins – it’s always good when work (that you’ve been chewing your nails over) finally gets somewhere.
  • All the love, love, love that has been floating about lately – Spring this year appears to bringing out engagements, weddings & baby announcements all over the place! And speaking of…
  • I almost have a nephew! & judging by my sister-in-law’s belly, he doesn’t need too much more time in the oven! This is what I made for the recent baby shower – an Eeyore Nappy Motorbike! (I already have a Christmas present sorted for him too. Oh dear.) Can’t wait to meet the little guy! Nappy Motorbike
  • Gritshed! While getting up to a 5.20am alarm isn’t my idea of a good time, throwing heavy weights around, sweating my butt off & doing 50-odd burpees before breakfast is a pretty rewarding activity. Hunger-inducing, but rewarding! The awesome Rita Ann Kerr has been doing her thing photographing us Gritters. It’s fantastic to have professional shots of everyone’s progress – it’s really motivating & helps you see how far you’ve really come. This is my favourite of the shots she’s captured of me:   Gritshed
  • Kind words in unlikely places… Like finding this message on our table in a Thai restaurant.thaispiration
  • Wisdom from Leo Babauta. This article on clearing resentment and this one on developing selfless compassion have both rocked my week. Nothing like a good kick in the emotional teeth to get your butt into gear & your head out of mopesville.

Things I Love Thursday: 12 Sep

Here’s what’s been floating my boat this week 🙂

  • Researching all things Paleo! This meal planning template was a particularly useful find.
  • Pinterest funnies, especially this:

  •  Celebrating the birthday of my best friend since forever on the weekend. Friendship established 1992 & still going strong!
    Nina's birthday

Here we are as chubby-faced primary schoolers 🙂

  • LOVE GRIT! Is it a tough workout? Here’s my post-GRIT face… Pooped!post grit
  • This Paleo Pizookie recipe with this banana ice cream recipe… Decadent but still a tick in the technical paleo book!

Paleo pizookie

  • And on banana ice cream: OMG!? I’d seen this article from The Kitchn before but just thought it was a bit of a beat up, or that I’d need some fancy-schmancy Thermomix-style blender. Ahhh no! It is pure magic! I shared the recipe with a workmate & he’s now using it as a bribery tool with his toddler. Bribery with just a frozen, blended banana – so simple! Just make it. You’ll see.

Things I Love Thursday: 25 July

Unashamedly flogged from blogger babe Gala Darling (who I’ve followed since forever), I present to you Things I Love Thursday. This is a love letter to all the things I’ve been digging in the last week (and a request to the heavens for more of the same!)

  • Getting so much stronger & more powerful through the magic of GRIT! To the uninitiated, it’s a super high intensity interval training workout that only goes for 30 minutes… but occasionally induces spews from participants. Major! This week I bumped my weights up a little, got through more push-ups on my toes & got through way more reps holding form. Loving it! This video is fairly produced but gives a pretty good overview.

[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wxFFCUXBu40&w=560&h=315]

  • Getting an unexpected late birthday parcel from my brother & his wife (who were both runners up in major cheffy awards this week – clever!) It got incorrectly delivered to a friendly neighbour who thankfully did not keep the new set of Peter Alexander pjs with cute accompanying hairband for herself and came door-knocking instead. Phew!

Lost birthday present

  • My pressure cooker… I shouldn’t love an appliance so much but it’s seriously fantastic. Pressure cooker, slow cooker & saute machine all in one shiny counter-top, easy-clean machine.
  • My ever-supportive other half who doesn’t get mad when I dive into bed with frozen feet and demand he warm them up with his own bed-toasty toes
  • Learning & being involved in new things at work. “User experience” is a big deal at work (and for good reason – we want users to have good experiences, right?!) and today I was involved in pulling together a load of research to map out some Personas for a new project.
    From UX mag:

A persona represents a cluster of users who exhibit similar behavioral patterns in their purchasing decisions, use of technology or products, customer service preferences, lifestyle choices, and the like. Behaviors, attitudes, and motivations are common to a “type” regardless of age, gender, education, and other typical demographics. In fact, personas vastly span demographics.

  • The birth of the #royalbaby Prince George – don’t whine, it’s lovely! Sweet couple got their sweet kid.
  • Making plans for some DIY projects (and not just the dinosaur craft!) I’ve got my eye on the dining stools for a serious revamp – stay tuned!

Blessing of the day

…looking at photos from 6 months ago & realising how much better off you are now, even though you thought you’d never be happier than you were in that moment.

Every day is better than the last & every hour brings you closer to your dreams. You never know how close you are, so never, never, never give up.

NOTE: More exciting posts to begin soon: back-to-work week has been more tiring than I thought it would be! In the days to come, expect to check out some of my daily outfits, read about Milan Fashion week and cop some commentary on the non-flood news of the week.

Things I Love Thursday

As inspired by Miss Gala Darling, here are the things I love, on this Thursday:
• Taking two whole days off from the gym & feeling so amped to get back first thing tomorrow morning
• Spending time with old friends – nothing beats that
• Knowing I’m back at work in four more sleeps! While everyone else around the place seems to hate being back at their respective jobs, I miss being in my office with my work people- I’m not very good at having time off to do nothing… Hence the increase in time spent at the gym!
• Moments of clarity
• The guy that plays the lead love interest in Burlesque. Hottt. (The movie was much better than expected actually. Aguilera has the greatest voice ever and, for a 307-year-old, Cher is surprisingly 40-looking. Note me down her surgeon & come back to me when I’m 63)
• Donating to the Queensland floods appeal. Do it.
• Chats with the grandmother
• Sleeping stretched out in your own bed
